On 4 June 2026, Own Your Hormones hosted a webinar on understanding perimenopause. We were joined by Dr. Juanri Jonck, founder of LifeLAB Medical Practice, who brought 15 years of experience in women’s health and hormone management to the conversation.
Here is what stayed with us.
Perimenopause doesn’t announce itself. It shows up in your energy, your sleep, your weight, your mood. For many women, it silently affects their work, their relationships, their sense of self. Most navigate it alone, convinced something is wrong with them. Something is wrong. But not with them.
Over 150 women registered for this conversation. They came looking for answers. What they found was permission: to stop suffering, to demand support, to put themselves first.
Weight Gain Is Not a Willpower Issue
One of the most important things Dr. Juanri said was this: weight gain in perimenopause is not a personal failure. As estrogen declines, your body shifts where it stores fat. More visceral fat accumulates around your organs. Your muscle mass drops. Your sleep collapses, sending hunger hormones skyrocketing. Insulin resistance increases. Cortisol climbs because you’re anxious, not sleeping, and juggling more than ever.
This is biology, not laziness. Stop blaming yourself.
What Works
Dr. Juanri outlined a practical framework that doesn’t require perfection, just intention.
Know your baseline. Get tested. Know your folate, B12, vitamin D, insulin levels. You can’t help anyone if you don’t first help yourself.
Move your body. Not for aesthetics. To build muscle, protect bone density, boost your metabolic rate. Two sessions a week at home. Full body work. Start where you are.
Eat anti-inflammatory. Adequate protein spaced throughout the day. Thirty to forty grams of fibre daily.
Sleep is non-negotiable. Morning light. Regular wake times. Caffeine cutoff by mid-afternoon. Cool bedroom. No phone in bed. If HRT could help, take it.
Find your people. Too many women suffer alone. Find your community. Name what’s happening. Language has power.
About HRT
You don’t have to suffer through this.
HRT, when appropriate, helps with sleep, brain fog, hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, bone loss. The research has shifted. The fear-mongering has been debunked. If it’s an option for you, take it.
But relief doesn’t only come from a prescription. It comes from knowing what your body needs, moving consistently, sleeping deeply, and having people who believe you.
Speak Up
Perhaps the most important thing Dr. Juanri said was this: you deserve to be heard. Too many women have had their symptoms dismissed by family members, partners, and even medical professionals. If something feels wrong, speak up. Find a doctor who takes perimenopause seriously. Get tested. Demand answers.
If you are a partner, a colleague, or someone close to a woman navigating perimenopause, this conversation is for you too. Believe her. Take her seriously. Help her get the care she needs.
